Joel is the Director of Track & Field, Cross Country for Harrier Track Club. He has previous held positions at Cardinal Stritch University (Director of Track & Field, Cross Country), Kennesaw State University / North Carolina A&T University  (Head Cross Country, Assistant Track & Field Coach), University of Iowa (Director of Track & Field Operations), 
Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne (Assistant Cross Country, Track & Field Coach) and Whatcom Community College (Head Cross Country / Track & Field Coach). An avid runner since age nine, Joel is a nationally-certified running coach and instructor through USA Track & Field, holding a USATF Level 3, IAAF level V Academy Coach - Endurance (w/ Distinction), and USATF Level 2 certifications in Endurance, Sprints/Hurdles/Relays, Combined Events, Jumps, and Youth. He also is a USATF Level 1 Instructor and has taught 15 courses in 9 different states. Joel is a USTFCCCA Certified Coach, holding an Endurance Specialist Certification, and Masters Endorsements in Long Distance, Middle Distance, Cross Country.

As a coach, 
Pearson has helped many runners meet their potential, ranging from a first-time race participants to Olympic Trials, and world qualifiers. The club has seen many athletes qualify for prestigious events under Pearson’s tutelage. Among those are Canadian Olympic Trials qualifiers (1500, 3k St), U.S. Olympic Trials qualifiers (800, 10k), Canadian Track and Field National qualifier (1,500m/5k), World Junior qualifier (Mtn), and three USA Junior National qualifiers (3k, 5k, 10k). Among the record holders he has coached, includes an American Junior record in the 50k and an El Salvador National Junior record in the 800 meters. Pearson coached Oliver Bear Don't Walk to the America Junior 50k track record with a time of 3:10:07.  

While at Cardinal Stritch University Pearson's Wolves captured 6 National Champions, 32 all-American Honors, and 42 National Qualifiers. In February of 2017, the Men's DMR set the National NAIA Record in 9:46.90. He also coached 3 National Athlete of the Year Awards. As the Head Cross Country, Distance Track & Field Coach for Kennesaw State University, the Owls achieved a National Qualifier (10k), Conference Record Holder (5k), 2 Conference Champions (5k, 800), and 15 School Records. Before the Owls, Pearson held the same position at North Carolina A&T State University where, in one year, he re-wrote 8 school records and recorded the second best cross country finish in school history. Prior to working with KSU and NCAT, Joel worked as the Director of Track & Field Operations at The University of Iowa and as the Assistant XC coach/recruiting coordinator at IPFW, a Division I institution in Fort Wayne, IN

2007, at age 21, he became one of the youngest collegiate head coaches in history, serving as the Head Cross Country and Track & Field coach for Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, WA. While with Orcas, he coached 33 school record holders, four collegiate cross country All-Americans, two regional champions, eight all-region honorees, one cross country champion, twice named regional coach of the year, and Laura Carlyle, a Canadian T&F National Qualifier. Joel has also coached state qualifiers for Meridian, Lynden, Mt. Baker, Blaine, Nooksack Valley, and Ferndale high schools in Washington State. 

His hard work and success over the years was rewarded by being selected to attend the USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camp held at the Olympic Training Center in July 2013. In 2012 he was also selected as 1 of 2 representatives of USATF to attend the NACACTFAC (North America, Central America, Caribbean, T&F Athletics Congress) in Nassau Bahamas. There he studied under world-renowned coaches in track and field. Pearson received a USATF Grant for both awards.

A native of Ferndale, Wasington, Pearson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with double majors in History and Coaching from Evergreen State College in Olympia, and a Masters in Sport Management from Cardinal Stritch University. As a runner, he was a multiple state qualifier and USATF all-American (Race Walk, 3k Steeple Chase, XC), and was a scorer on Mead High 2002 Washington State 4A Championship team.  he was twice named “Top 5 USA”. Joel has competed in six marathons, winning three of them, most memorable being the 2005 Birch Bay Marathon, a race won 16 times by his father (World record). Joel is now the race director for the Birch Bay Marathon. He is the son of former American 50 Mile Record Holder and US Champion, Jim Pearson.
